HIGHLIGHT VIDEO: YOGA FIRST SEEN IN PUBLIC IN 1898
Posted in Blog by Eric Shaw(PLEASE CLICK ON THE PIC. A VIDEO WILL APPEAR!)
As we review yoga history, we note that the first person to teach yoga postures openly in America was Swami Abhedananda–a gurubhai (brother monk) of Swami Vivekananda.
Both were followers of the first publicaly-acknowledged Indian saint of the modern age, Ramakrishna Paramahansa (1836-1886), but Vivekananda headed up his monk’s order after Ramakrishna’s death.
Swami V came to America in 1893, where he found a receptive audiences and supporters. He brought Swami Abhedananada to New York from India three years later.
Abhedananda taught yoga postures, something Vivekananda did not do! (The great master only taught meditation and pranayama, and held Satsangs–”truth talks.”)
I gave this talk Wednesday night for the yoga history section of the CorePower Yoga Teacher Training Program in Berkeley.
